Help identifying a lathe part

Post by Darren92530 »

I have a part that came with my lathe when I purchased it 5 years ago. I have often wondered what it is...
Can anybody here help me figure out what it is, maybe even who makes it?
It is about 2 ft tall.

My first guess would be part of a milling attachment? If so, appears to be missing the mounting surface.

I guess it could be if the lathe was really big. It looks similar to an armature under cutter. But it’s really big

Perhaps it's not for the lathe at all.

Perhaps but I am pretty sure that is either for the lathe or a mill... who knows... I guess if someone on here has seen one and knows what it is they’ll tell me....

Maybe a lathe milling attachment with the plate and very likely original vise gone off for use on either a drill press or real mill at some point. No idea of a manufacturer, but it may have been shop made anyway for use on some specialized work they did a lot of. At one time in house pattern making and foundry's were a lot more common than today, so having actual castings made was a lot more practical. Still only rough guesses on my part though. HSM magazine published an article mid 80's maybe? For a shop built milling attachment very much like that one except it was quite a bit shorter. Even at that there's no guarantee it really was a milling attachment. There's lots of other uses for adjustable positioning devices. And hard to be sure with those pictures, but that doesn't appear to have any kind of a dial one would expect to see on a real milling attachment for the Z axis movement.

It might be helpful to know the make of lathe in question. Is it just a lathe, or is it a combo machine?

My lathe is an old atlas craftsman lathe. It already has a milling attachment p/n 10-501, 10-502. I have seen similar devices that are for refinishing the armature on an electric motor. Each part has casting numbers but they don’t come up on any google searches...

It's definitely NOT an atlas or craftsman part.

If it is a milling or armature attachment, it would be for a very large lathe given the height.

There were lathes (e.g. Emco) that had a milling head mounted to the back of the lathe and you would put the work on the carriage.

It might be one of those.

I can say for sure that's not part of an Emco milling head column. But I almost thought it was as well Steve when I first saw the pictures. The column has the wrong diameter to length ratio, castings are incorrect and the base is meant to get bolted straight down instead of 90 degrees into a lathe bed. Even the hand wheel is about 3 times larger and the incorrect shape than what Emco used. And the casting to mount the head was a very square shape plus there's no key on the column to keep the head aligned.

I have a very similar part, but it is the column for a Grizzly power feed that feeds wood stock into a shaper.
