If you want flashing in a dead simple LED driver circuit, use a LP5560...

In its default state it flashes about once a second.
I use one similar to these (LM3909) powered by a single D-cell battery in an annunciator to indicate the garage door is open. The battery lasts for years in this application.
I checked and Mouser still sells this device...
