LIMITED RELEASED Depressed Flat Car for 1/8 Scale

Post by SPSteam2491 »

***LIMITED RELEASE, ONE TIME PRODUCTION RUN***

During the 1950’s, the need for railroads to haul heavier and larger loads was ever increasing. While flat cars typically carried these loads, larger solutions were needed and what was produced were depressed flat cars. The version created by Pacific Design Shops with collaboration from Pike River Shops is a 58’, 3-Axle (Buckeye truck) depressed flat car for 1/8 scale produced by General Steel Castings during the early 1950’s. This car was used by many major railroads until late into the 1980’s hauling all sorts of loads such as large steel pipes, power plant equipment and transformers.

Measuring in at almost 8’ long and weighing over 250 lbs with Tom Bee Buckeye trucks, this is a heavy duty & detailed car for your railroad. The kit comes complete with over 50 CNC cut and bent parts that incorporate tab and slot construction to ease assembly. 11 gauge steel is used throughout the car for structural members and 16 gauge steel is used for the detailed parts. As with all the kits from Pacific Design Shops, a detailed set of step-by-step instructions are included. The cars come standard with steel end decks but can be upgraded to wooden end decks.

As neat as the Buckeye version looks, we know that the length and weight of the car may be too much to handle for some, so we went off the prototype path and created a 2-Axle version of the same car for those that want a detailed and unique depressed flat car. The length of this car is ~6.5’ over the couplers and weighs ~160 lbs.

These kits will be produced on a limited, one time only production run. All the detail parts and hardware are included in the kit price (trucks and couplers not included). Delivery to Mill Creek in August or White Creek in July can be arranged and is preferred but arrangements can be made to ship the kits for an additional charge. Please reach out for additional questions.

Buckeye, 3-Axle Version Kit: $800
2-Axle Version Kit: $650
Optional Individual Wood Plank Deck Upgrade: $45

Which Buckeye trucks are they designed for? Tom Bee Trucks are 1.6" scale which could raise the center line of the coupler pocket. The Buckeye Trucks for the Jim Krieder's Berkshire are very nice but outside of my pocket book. I don't know of any other buckeye trucks on the market. I seem to remember Little Engine having a buckeye Truck at some point in history but not sure if the trucks are still around or not.

The Buckeye version is designed for Tom Bee Buckeye trucks. We didn't have access to the other version of Buckeye trucks out there but from the data we collected, the Tom Bee version is the largest. The other versions should fit but an additional spacer may need to be added to get the coupler centerline at the correct height.

The B&O had some of the 4 wheel truck version. I think that one is at the museum in Baltimore. Interesting cars.

We have a few remaining kits from our Depressed Flat Car run for 1/8" scale that are ready to ship. A great example of the kit being built by one of our customers can be found here: http://www.chaski.org/homemachinist/vie ... 21#p446421

These cars are made from steel laser cut and CNC bent parts with tab and slot construction to ease assembly. With all our kits, detailed instructions are included as well so you are not left in the dark on how to assemble them. Welding is required with these kits.

We have (5) Buckeye versions available at $850 for the kit.
And we have (2) 2-Axle versions available at $700 for the kit.
An optional wood deck is available for $45.

These kits won't be run again so get them now while you can.
