COMING SOON: D&RGW trucks for KOZO K-27

Post by Adirondack »

Hi folks. At the request of some of the members of the 3 1/2" gauge group on Facebook ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/298383703653665/ ), I will be producing proper D&RGW trucks for equipment to run behind the KOZO K-27. They will match the KOZO engine in scale exactly, and feature the same quality and build style as my Maine 2 foot trucks. I will also produce numerous detail castings (stake pockets, brakewheels, door hardware, etc) to allow you to build proper rolling stock.

There's no official ETA at this time, but I will keep this thread updated as I make progress. As always, feel free to message me with questions or comments. I am fully committed to 3 1/2" gauge, regardless of the scale or prototype.

Thanks for looking!

Hi folks.

Quick update: I should have a full prototype truck ready within the month. For now, here is the updated bolster section, needing only a few radiused edges and some fillets added before 3D printing the master pattern at 25 microns resolution. As you can see, both the top and underside are fully detailed per the prototype.

I am now accepting reservations at $100USD per pair. The expected final price will be between $250-300 complete, with no machining required.

Hi folks. More progress has been made, and it is certainly getting close to completion. Please place your reservation sooner rather than later so everyone can enjoy better pricing.

Obviously, some concessions will need to be made for the sake of operation in the final model, but it will certainly look the part.

Hi folks. Here's something to be proud of-my first test print of the bolster. Made on my new SLA printer at 50 microns. Final prints will be at 25 microns for a perfect finish. White residue is from having only a quick rinse. I'll use the ultrasonic cleaner next time.

If you are interested, now is the time to place your reservation. I should have a complete prototype within a week or two.

More soon!

Today's installment: journal boxes. You can see how the roller bearing slots right into the piece for a perfect fit.

If you look very closely, you can just see the tiny NBW that attaches the lid to the box.

We haven't been resting on our laurels with the Kozo project either.

Here you can see a low-res print of the split journal with the roller bearing shown inserted. This journal will sandwich a laser cut steel frame for a durable assembly.

More soon.

So... After completing the design for the D&RGW trucks on 3 1/2" gauge, I had some time to model a different construction method that would utilize investment cast sideframes and bolster. While I do feel it better replicates the prototype, I'm not sure if it is worth the additional effort and cost.

What would folks prefer? Is the original style with the laser cut steel sideframes and add-on pieces sufficient, or does this new more detailed version knock it out of the park?

Opinions wanted!

Thanks

Hi folks.

Quick update: The trucks are now out for quoting to be investment cast. I'm going with the fully detailed version, as it really does look amazing.

Also, the D&RGW brakewheel is now available 3D printed in a durable engineering-grade resin.

Models look great...I'm not building anything in that scale now, but I think I will have to get a couple pairs...just in case! How about caboose trucks too?
