This is an old thread (pun not intended), I still have a question

I suppose the flutes were cut before the thread to avoid having burrs on the thread subjecting to the inconvenience of an interrupted cut.

That is the question. Which came first, the flutes or the threads? And why?

For the one I made, threads came first, flutes last, otherwise, the threads tend to be uneven. A light past with a stone takes off the burrs.

The uneven condition of a thread so created can be controlled by placing a slight drag on the carriage while chasing the thread.

Still, the endless interrupted cut isn't in one's best interest. Best of all scenarios would be to grind the thread after the roughed tap was heat treated. A very unlikely thing in a home shop.
