C84400 Ingot want to buy

Post by FLtenwheeler »

Hi

I am looking for a 20 pound ingot of C84400 Leaded Semi- Red Brass 81-3-7-9. But I would buy up to 100 pounds.

Thanks

Atlas Bronze has it, but it is a made-to-order product, so my guess is "not cheap".

Here's a foundry that casts in it. Maybe they can sell you some or get you a source:

I sent out three or four RFQ's for red brass to suppliers about a month ago and I got one response back. For some reason I cant find the email but they wanted a minimum order of 100 pounds which I did not think was unreasonable however I only need a small quantity. I think it was Belmont Metals but I cant be sure.

Thanks for the lead Steve- not sure why that foundry has never come up in a google search for me- they are only an hour away from me. I will give them a call and see if they would sell a small quantity.

Wouldn't be all that hard to make your own alloy. Copper wire and pipe are virtually pure, and the other elements (lead, zinc and tin) are available, although I don't have any sources to recommend.

Start by melting the copper. Once fluid, introduce the preheated (to prevent a steam explosion) alloying elements and stir well. If you happen to have an induction furnace, stirring isn't required.

Done!

This procedure is routine for many of those who work with gold alloys.

Seems to me this would be a good time for everyone that needs small quantities to band together and make a bulk purchase.

I have purchased my ingots from this company since the 1970's: http://www.hkramer.com/contact-us.html

It's about a 50 mile drive, and they load the stuff up, and I pay them cash.

I use mostly C99700

C99700 has a Machinability Rating of 80 compared to 90 for C84400 Leaded Semi-red Brass and 100 C36000 Free Machining Brass.

I wounder how it holds up for steam fittings? It has a lot of zinc in it. It would be prone to dezincafication.

You can purchase ingots from Lancaster Foundry Supply. I purchased C84400 to cast accessories with. It has a 90% machinable rating. Then I ordered some C83600 to cast boiler fittings from. It has a 84% machinable rating and is what it used on full size valves up to 150 PSI steam. I also ordered some A356 aluminum to make truck parts from.
