SLIP ROLLERS/ American vs. foreign
SLIP ROLLERS/ American vs. foreign
American made tools vs Chinese/Taiwan tools....I'm looking at the Tennsmith SR48 for $3550 or the Jet SR-1650M for $1800. Is the Tennsmith that much better that you can justify the price I want to buy American but an $1800 difference is just too much of a margin. I don't make a living with it, I'm more of a hobbyist. Any input would be appreciated.

Re: SLIP ROLLERS/ American vs. foreign
I have always found the Jet items to decent quality - The few that I have performed to expectations over the years.
Re: SLIP ROLLERS/ American vs. foreign
A quick look revealed that the Tennsmith weighs nearly twice as much as the Jet, although the Jet does not have a stand. Slip rolls are a tool that should be easy to inspect if buying used. Check for rust, bent rolls, loose gears, etc. I purchased a 24" roll from Summit Racing because it is local and I had a immediate need for one. It has been fine for my needs. I do keep an eye open for tools in local auctions and Craigslist. Slip rolls don't come up as often as brakes or shears, but they are out there. They tend to have asking prices under $1000 in my area.
HGR has a powered 48" Tennsmith for $2800:

Re: SLIP ROLLERS/ American vs. foreign
does twice the weight mean better ?
Re: SLIP ROLLERS/ American vs. foreign
While there are exceptions, in machine tools, weight tends to be a good indication of quality. Mass equates to a machine being robust, capable of dealing with greater forces, and able to retain a machine's capabilities for a greater usage period.PIGMAN wrote:does twice the weight mean better ?

The 3 in 1 Harbor Freight machine--shear, bend and roll in My opinion is a Waste of money. Unless you use it for small / short light gauge metal .
I have one and use mostly 24 gauge metal. To cut a full 30" length is pretty tough and then I use extra clamps if I can so the metal does not slide off line. The hold down is not that good. . To roll something is quite hard to adjust, Not like a regular slip roll. Bending? I have not really tried that, maybe a couple times, does not give a Sharp bend.
Went and bought a 4 foot Pan/box/finger brake. (That is called the same thing depends on where you learned the trade).
overall, I think it is a waste for real metal work and mostly I only cut maybe 20" pieces or less.
Yes, I am a metal worker by trade.
