Air gun oil

Post by spro »

Not saying this is new to springer type owners but.. Ordinary gun oil is not to be used all in high pressure air guns. Usually there will be a certain amount when the gun is purchased but if somebody just buys one or dusts it off to use, they may not think of this. Unlike firearms the compression is very high behind the projectile. There are sliding parts to launch at 700-1200fps and this raises the possibility of deisel or ignition of the oil by compression. So think that over before oiling.

I recall reading in an old book on air guns -- probably Leslie Wesley's, the version that was around in the 50s -- about doing that DELIBERATELY. Didn't seem like a good way to keep a gun working, and IIRC the author said it could split the compression chamber open.

I certainly wouldn't try it with a modern high-velocity springer.

Bottom line: X2 on "Use the manufacturer-recommended lubricants".
