Kit "Blanks"

Post by ctwo »

Are there any sort of kits or material blanks for something like a revolver?

ctwo,

The only ones I ever saw, and built, was for black powder.

revolvers are a tough project except for some parts kits(everything but the frame) a 1911 semiauto is a doable build
lot of parts and documentation available and prints to work from.

as a secong thought a good starter project would be a jaco action many fine single shots have been built by
home gunsmiths. lots of build plans and documented builds out there.

CVA used to sell kits for blackpowder revolvers. Not bad quality. The fitting was "needle-file" work; hardest part was getting the cylinder timing right, and polishing out all the belt-grinder marks.

I don't recall ever seeing a kit for a cartridge revolver. That might step on the NFA, let alone local restrictions on handgun ownership, which mostly don't apply to BP stuff. (Unless you live in NY City.)

I'm sure it would be a challenging project...I'm surprised to hear that a semi-auto 1911 would be easier than a revolver - I figured revolvers would be easier just because they were being made so long ago.

One part I've not seen how to do is rifling...I imagine one would run a rabbit down the barrel on the lathe, like turning a thread...

I would like to build something like a 6-1/2" barrel Ruger .357 convertible...

Barrel making is highly specialized, so much so that most people buy barrels unless making one is the primary challenge.

You'd most likely have to look beyond the use of the screw, as the ratio is totally unreasonable.

Yep, I just looked into it - either like broaching which is what I imagined) or hammer forging...this might be a case where wanting is better than having anyway...I was also reading the local laws here and it seems illegal to even discharge a nerf gun...

In giving a little thought to the issue, it may be possible to drive the spindle through the leadscrew, altering the gears such that you'd achieve the desired twist. Might be a long shot, but worth investigating. The only issue, then, would be indexing properly. That, of course, was assuming you could build the gun legally. Sounds like your hands are tied.

button rifling is a option in that the pitch etc is set by the button and in essence all you do is pull it thru.

the down side would be cost.
barrels are available for 25 dallors on up in the surplus and even new seconds market.
