Sight Height?

Post by mic5 »

Can't believe I can't find the answer to this one, what with the popularity of tritium and firesights and the like, but...

How does one measure the height of a front sight blade insert??? Is it the overall height, the height from the center of the bead to the top of the dovetail, the average distance from the bore centerline to the moon...

IOW, if we're looking at a 3/8" dovetail blade with a given height of say 0.375", just where did they get that dimension? Clear as mud?

Brownells uses overall sight height (bottom of dovetail to top of sight.) Mil-spec 1911 sights (pinned type) are measured base to top. That's two votes for overall, but I suspect if you look hard enough you'll find someone measuring them from tip to top of bbl / slide. In other words - when in doubt, call the vendor!
