Sharps update

Post by homebrew .357 »

Hi All, just to let you know all's going good with my home made Sharps rifle, a lot of lead has gone down the barrel now and just had to make the front sight a bit higher as it was shooting 2/3". It`s now spot on at 50m 8 shots in a 60mm wide group. Pic`s, sorry no go with IMG OR URL ?. Homebrew.357.

Don't know if he provided that information in his ongoing posts about the build, but it's a wonderful read, displaying some amazing talent. Here's a link to the thread if you're interested.

As I have all my gun drilling bits I`m drilling and rifling a few blank .45 cal muzzle loading barrels and will cut rifle them with a 1-48 twist as I have changed to a sine bar on my lathe and can now get a twist from 1-18" to 1-70", and will put them on our trade me to see if someone wants to make a rifle. Cheers, Homebrew.357.

Hi all, with my new drilling and rifling set up I thought a .50" cal swap barrel for my Hawken .45 would be the go. Now I could cut rifle with a twist of 1-18" to 1-70" and Right hand, From Ebay I got a .50" gundrill so away I went, drilled hole came out, .501" to .499". A good lapping to smooth and true the bore then made up a new rifling cutter head for a .50 bore, I cut eight groves with a 1-48' twist about .010" deep and again a lead lapping with diamond past. Progress pics. Homebrew.357. PS, Have found how to load pic`s!!.

Nice job. :D Did the lapping reduce the .002 bore dia. difference any? How does it shoot?

Now hang on, don`t jump the gun, as you can see it`s got no sights on yet and it`s still round. So set it up in the lathe to shave the barrel octagonal and being 1" stock, the same as my .45 barrel, when it was finished it fitted in the stock nicely . Now next job was milling and fitting the sights, lined them up to the bore centre , hopefully on target. pic`s, Homebrew.357.

You can see I've made a booboo here, but I was looking at my Sharps up date and thought I would put a new post about my .50 barrel build but forgot to get of this one. Anyway the back sight was fitted, it was a two leaf flip up sight I had in my bits box, save me making one, so when I was on my hunting trip I gave it a proof test, 90gr 2f , 490 p r ball and all was good. Fast forward went to the range to check the sights at 50mt with 65gr 2f and p r b, first shots where 7 1/2" low and with the 100yrd leaf sight up the last two shots were just under the red patch, my aiming point for all the 11 shots. All in line horizontally but I worked out I need .032" off the top of the fore sight. Still rubbing my sore shoulder, the big bore sure has a good smack to it. Pic`s of things, Homebrew.357.

Jackf, the lapping only gets rid of the sharp edges and smooths things out, not much meatal is removed. Still trying to get it shooting to the sights, at 50m it`s still a bit low so will keep cutting down the front sight till its on. Showing good grouping at 50m with 50gr 3f and with a bit more shooting and polishing the bore should come right, not bad for a home made barrel. Homebrew.357. range pic.
