Re: Nylatron Bushing Use

Charlie, What Kap says. Paul Brien, who for reader's benefit, began his working life at age 15 at Consolidated-Vultee Aircraft during the War, rose to Head of QC at one of the South's major Tool & Die works, was used to working to close fits. He also was open to using new techniques and material...

Re: Online Program for Valve Gear Design

My understanding has always been that the Dockstader programs were intended to be PROOFING programs, a tool, for testing designs for which the builder developed the variables. In the last version of Dockstader Walschaerts gear I have, IIRC there were about 57 variables to be determined.

Re: Interesting story about a 2019 theft in the UK

Scrapped?? Surely you must be joking. Like many other model thefts, this was in all probability a targeted theft and the loco was whisked out of the country within hours, and is now in a private collection.

Re: workbench top finish

I have, and my worktop surfaces are covered with an off-white Formica (or Wilson-Art) and are the best worktop surfaces I've ever had. Neither are glued on. I lay it out flat and put some weight on it for a couple of days and it lays dead flat and doesn't move. I don't do anything that involves heav...

Re: Surface Grinder Rebuild

Thanks for the comments. I was inclined to retain the flat belt drive anyway, if no significant improvment would be had by going to newer technology. I'm aware of the advantges 3ph and balancing.

Surface Grinder Rebuild

The machine is the "Universal Grinder", made by Draper & Hall Co, Middletown CT, and it came from the Engineering School machine shop of Vanderbilt University. My next door neighbor in high school (when I first became interested in steam engines and machining) was a professor of Mech E...

All this reminds me I'll need to build one of these for myself for some future work and I now recall reading about the MEW bender.

Re: Pipe,tube and bar bender

That was just the first downloadable drawing I came to and I can't vouch for its flexibility and performance. There are definitely many others out there designed with flexibility and performance for the model builder in mind, perhaps simpler to build, so I'd look at a few others before spending too ...

Re: Pipe,tube and bar bender

Over time there have been dozens of bender designs published in various model engineering magazines, intended for "model" tube sizes, 1/16" to 3/8" diam. I don't have a specific article, or list of articles on hand to post but a start would be to do a Google search. A search for ...
