Thanks Cary, I guess I could have opened my LALS Roster and found that out myself! He must have passed before I joined in 1978, so I never met the man...

E J Paul - Inglewood, California 1/2" scale Pacific (B&O President)
In my large pile of drawings I've acquired over the years, I've come across a set of 1/2" Pacific (B&O P7 President Class, 5300 President Washington) drawn by E J Paul of Inglewood, California. These are a very detailed set, close attention to prototype detail. They were drawn approx 1943 t...

Re: New Year.....New project
"I made the slots slightly oversize to allow one box to raise up a bit without binding, only about .010" as one journal box isn't going to move much more than it's mate." Thanks Jack; we'll go with the .010" clearance. I can't see a situation where one box is all the way up and ...

Re: New Year.....New project
Jack, sorry to drag up this old thread, but I'm at the journal box stage of my D30. Prof Coventry just shows the jbox slots at the nominal frame width of 5/16". LBSC does the same (like on the 'Virginia'). Kozo's A3 is mostly straight, with a chamfer at the corners. Martin Evan has the slots ra...

Seems my family is migrating there too. Son on the Columbia at Cathlamet, Sister in Port Townsend...
Good luck with the move.

Re: Nuby question
There is dust that blows in from the field behind my shop, so I cover my machines with canvas when not in use. I find that old linen bed sheets make good machine covers (my wife has given me quite a few!). Even in SoCal my machines will acquire surface rust if left uncovered for awhile. If I'm not ...

Re: Stainless steel boiler/exchanger?
As already been mentioned ss is no good for boilers because of the metallurgical problems that accompany it. Having said that. It is used in in UNFIRED pressure vessels and process piping. Provided it doesnt reach the temp at which carbide precipitation occurs its all good. Fireside of heating surf...

Re: Stainless steel boiler/exchanger?
Stainless steels also do not transfer heat very well through them, so making your tubes out of stainless would likely make your boiler not steam as well. this is also why you wouldn't make a heat exchanger or feedwater heater out of stainless. As I noted before, Doug (Alkire) in 'So you want to Bui...
