Re: Brass

Flitz polish in the tube is also good like Simichrome.
After trying everything I ended up using Flitz on my CP173. It leaves behind a wax coating that slows down tarnish.

Re: My lathe is older than dirt

Yeah it's really slow to set up and indicate the part in, and today almost worthless in a real money making shop unless you were desperate. I guess it's all relative. For our hobby sized stuff I absolutely agree. Having worked in and managed very profitable production "money making shops"...

Re: Driver Thrust Bearing

Aluminum bronze thrust bearings with grease and also grease for the replacement needle bearings would be my choice.
A small chainsaw grease pump through drilled axles works well.

Johnson Bar Latch

Quick question: Should the latch handle on a Johnson bar be on the front towards the front of the engine or towards the back of the cab? I've seen both ways in both models and prototypically with "towards the back of the cab" seeming to be the most popular. Is on the back more prone to acc...

Re: Silver Soldering

I prefer not to store buckets of stuff so... Other than using hot water if I want a brighter finish I pickle with Lemi Shine detergent booster which is largely citric acid. It's readily available, inexpensive and can be found at many Walmarts so I just mix some in water when I need it, no storage bu...

Re: Eliminating this danger

A retired brushed (I think they all have brushes) shop vac motor and fan running on a12V motorcycle battery worked well for me when air wasn't available. It was almost silent. When there was compressed air I just used a J tube dropped down the stack.

Re: The William Harris Steam Donkey Engine in 2.5 inch Scale

I agree, in this instance I don't see a need for prehard. The rear chain sprockets I jetted were a different story plus we had a ton of prehard drops laying around.

Re: The William Harris Steam Donkey Engine in 2.5 inch Scale

Unless you need to do compound indexing simple gears are pretty easy in the shop, single pointed or milling cutter. I did many a number of years ago the worst being a 101 tooth gear that I compound indexed on a 40 turn dividing head. It was a change gear for a 60 year old G&L vertical gear hobbi...

Re: Allen models Fitchburg Northern build by first timer

Godshall's has a lot of supplies. The archives here are a must for accessory ideas and some drawings. For accessory drawings, many can be found here- http://ibls.org/mediawiki/index.php?title=Special:AllPages I used the Small Marty Burner design on the IBLS site as a starting point for making a pile...

Re: Stainless Steel Model Bolts?

For a "scale" look these days I make most of mine from purchased hex stock, turning and threading in the lathe but have purchased from Godshall's. I've been very happy with their quality.
