Re: slide valves very hard to move.

As above, not dry, I used way oil, I will try breaking the edge and using 90 weight as soon as I get the plumbing buttoned up. And lowering the test pressure. I'm a bit over the .125" pin, I am using a no. 8 bolt - about .164".

Re: slide valves very hard to move.

please explain what 'works fine at 30-40 psf' are you saying it takes 30-40# to move the valve stem - or that the valve stem seems to move OK with a chest pressure of 30-40 psi? I'll take Door No 2 Bill! It all seems pretty good till I crank the regulator on the compressor in a bit. I am currently ...

Re: Argent Lumber 3 spot

Crossheads are done. I made the rockers and rocker boxes. The boxes are made up out a short strip of angle which is then brazed to the machined tube of the pivot. Brazing there allowed me to sliver solder a vertical leg on to the base of the angle that will go alongside and be bolted to the upper fr...

Re: slide valves very hard to move.

Andy, thanks, it seems to work fine at say 30-40 psf, but that is another thing to check. Possibly conditions change at higher pressures.
Bill, good suggestion.

Re: slide valves very hard to move.

Yes, I did the undercut. I used to work at 12" = 1'-0" scale, and did it for reason no. 2.

Re: slide valves very hard to move.

I have some straight 90 weight mineral oil, I will try that. It seems to me that the sharp leading edge of the valve is going to scrape away the lube though. Rob, the thing I am concerned about is after I get it running on air, getting out to the track and it won't move or it wrecks the rocker ass'y...

slide valves very hard to move.

I scratchbuilt a set of cylinders and associated valves seats. I used timesaver and lapped the bronze valves and the cast iron seats dead flat. They seal great. However, when testing the assemblies on air, the valves are very hard to move above 50 pounds pressure. I used way oil as a lube, I don't h...

Re: Argent Lumber 3 spot

Got a nice break over Christmas. I whittled some crossheads out of bar stock and connected the piston rods. I still have to make the slippers for the other side.

Re: My lathe is older than dirt

You are going to have a hard time finding a new chuck that has integral spindle threads the size you need. You'll probably need a backplate and a plain back chuck. I've seen semi-finished backplates that have that thread. I don't seem to find any that have the 1 7/8" x 8tpi thread I need ...

Re: crankpin ends

I've seen a small bolt tapped into the side of the rod to press against the key. Ones I saw had a locknut. This was on the Rogers 0-4-0 at the museum.

Here's one on Argent 7. No locknut.

Re: crankpin ends

Here's the 5" gauge engine before the ends were installed.
I think I remember what I am thinking of from the tiny little porter I worked on at the museum - seeing a nut on the inside end of the pin.

Re: crankpin ends

Why fake it? Strapped and wedged rods work very well and are prototypical. Uh, yeah, but the pins are made and in the drivers, and the rods are made. If I had it to do over, I would not have used the "round bushing in a solid rod" design. And if I am modeling a Porter, which I am, I may b...
