Re: Cagney valve gear question
Thank you Mike, I ordered a recent reprint of the book. Sounds like a good reference. Outside the forum I learned many of the original Cagney’s were equipped with Baker Gear - some got replaced with Walschaerts over the years, as the original equipment wore out. I think I will definitely go with out...

Cagney valve gear question
Hello all, Iam building out a 15” partially assembled Cagney. It currently has no valve gear, or parts, and no eccentrics on the axles, etc, so basically starting with a blank slate. So thinking about installing a Walschaerts gear, instead of the historically common Stephansons. Mainly due to ease o...

Re: Battery electric instrumentation
GRA2472, thanks. Looks like the perfect set of gauges. Iam a little unclear yet how to figure maximum possible amp draw. I suspect the forklift motors might draw more than 100 amps at peak draw… the controllers are rated at 400 amps.

Dick, thanks for posting. Very impressed with the C&O Museum’s efforts to produce such nice animations.
Their earlier part 1 video is informative also.

Re: Battery electric instrumentation
A local EV club member gave me a couple of series wound 7” x 14” forklift tractor motors. So I have one motor for each hood end. I think the controllers are old school Curtis 1204 models (non programmable, but 400 amp capacity). Set up for chain and sprocket drive, with an intermediate Jack shaft to...

Battery electric instrumentation
Iam trying to decide what instrumentation to install in the cab to monitor battery life and electric draw during operation. This will be a 1/3rd scale, battery electric, 44 ton center cab (48v, maybe latter 60 volt, system) with 1600 -2000 amp hours available with two battery packs and two motors (o...

Re: Drilling holes at an angle
Very interesting responses. I think the 1/2”x2” work is loose e.g. not already mounted in place. So potentially could be set up in a jig and clamped to a table. Don’t know what his tolerance is for the finished product. It’s a welded stair railing, so not likely to be a precision job. I’ll pass on y...

Drilling holes at an angle
A guy on our local metalworkers forum is asking how to drill 5/8” od holes, at an 33 degree angle, into vertically mounted 1/2” x 2” flat bar. He doesn’t have a mill available for the work, just a drill dress.
Any suggestions how to accomplish such a task?

Cagney eccentrics
Anybody know the dimensions for 15” ga Cagney Eccentrics ? Particularly looking for OD and radial distance to the crank pins.
Alternatively, is there some rule of thumb, where these dims can be calculated?
Thanks

Re: Chatter on Single Point Threading
Yep, look at the screw itself. Changing mine made an enormous difference - basically made the lathe work like new again.

Re: Chatter on Single Point Threading
I had a similar problem with my 1968 south bend Fourteen lathe. When I bought it used, I noticed a lot of “chatter” marks repeating on the finish cuts when turning down various parts. Short story, the cross feed screw was worn in some of the middle area of the thread. This allowed the cutting tool (...

Re: How long to heat soak?
Interesting experience with locktite. A friend of mine build a small box cab a few years ago - mainly to transport down to, and run around, train mountain. He used Locktite on the wheels and axles. Worked great for 500 miles. Then it failed. We surmised these axle epoxies have a finite life span.
