IIRC Fred did it with a small chisel re-shaped tool to round the ends over, about 10 degrees at a time.

Doesn't that describe most of California in general?
It used to be that you knew your diesel was set right when it would shoot carbon balls out the stack after it had been idling for a while.

not exactly... it is a process where the end of the tube is folded over with the tool and beaded behind the tube sheet at the same time to keep the tube from working in / out of the tubesheet with temp changes maybe car exhausts use this -> never seen it I have only ever done it on BIG boilers...and...

Not the first time I have heard of it mentioned - > and was used on full size boilers (not just locos) with steel tubes -> but it is a real PITA on a small boiler -> and only Fred would have done it because...well ....it was Fred... all the rest of us just roll the tubes in place and be done with it...
