Re: Railroad Warehouse 2.8.2 Mikado Logger Build

Re: Auto rack

A search of 1/8 scale cars pops up many options.

Many of which are probably not in the price range.

Revell seems to have some, but you would have to build and paint..

Re: Railroad Warehouse 2.8.2 Mikado Logger Build

Sadly we do own a do all grinder, in the shop at the other end of the farm. Brother in law has not used it in 20 years but is not interested in allowing me to move it ..so it sits, no power, covered in dust...buried behind tons of farm detritus. Not worth starting Hatfields and McCoy fight over it...

Re: Railroad Warehouse 2.8.2 Mikado Logger Build

Nah ...in our scales, the loco would just tip over when the rod hit the ground...😃

Hollow piston rods with structural problems at 8 MPH has never been a consideration.

Crank pins coming out ...maybe....

Re: Railroad Warehouse 2.8.2 Mikado Logger Build

I have a friend that worked in a grinding shop where they had electromagnetic chucks on the surface grinders (lots of little transformer cores that didn't seem to like permanent magnet chucks...) first time the power went off -> he noticed that EVERYBODY in the shop was on the floor...until the whee...

Re: Railroad Warehouse 2.8.2 Mikado Logger Build

since I don't have a grinder, I use a square collet in my lathe with a stop in the back...

your solution is much more elegant...but also requires that a smithy learn to run a grinder.....

looks really cool....keep on truckin'

Re: Reducing union tees

It comes in chunks. At my lack-of-skill levels: chassis on air 25% tender 20% boiler 30% piping and baloney and paint is the remainder...what's that...20% ? depending on each person's skill set (or lack thereof), these numbers are on a sliding scale. comes to mind the Reading A5s built some 50+ year...

Re: Building a 4.5 in scale Foden Steam Truck in New England

If there is a mistake to be made...been there done that....and have a band-aid to avoid in future. My cognition is so bad that in the middle of spinning the head, I will lose count S I have one of these old style holes in the palm mechanical counters...press on the button and it counts one. Makes me...

Re: Reducing union tees

The second law of building a steam loco is:

Build the tender first 🤔, or at least concurrently with the loco.

There are synthetic substitutes. I just happen to have a lifetime supply that was manufactured during WW2 and willed to me...
