Re: check valves for 1/8" tubing
I've bought them before from Cole's, but that has been years ago. I also got a small union and a close nipple, and a bushing. I believe that I used 3/16" fittings, and then drilled the bushing and the end of the union, and silver soldered them onto the oil lines. I did it that way, so that you ...

Re: Heavenly Hill Top railroad
Yeah, he comes down to Mid-South meets a lot. I've never been to the railroad or seen it. That narrow Gage 2-8-2 he has is really something. It's a great performer. He's also fixed it so that it has both a water glass and some indicator lights that show boiler water level. It's really neat to see. I...

Re: Stolen Whislte
I've seen several of those Chance Rides 4-2-4s up close. They were hydraulic drive, I believe, and the front and rear truck were powered just like a diesel locomotive would be. The center drive wheels were just rolling along for the ride. Definitely a steam outline locomotive. They are pretty neat, ...

Re: Clark Steam Engine
Yes, he's had to make quite a few parts for it, and of course try to make them fit and work as he went along. Now that it's together and not working properly, although everything seems to look right, he's trying to get more information. Maybe even a set of drawings. I don't know if you could change ...

Clark Steam Engine
I am trying to collect information for a friend of mine who is trying to get this engine back up and running properly: From Greg: My mentor in our club, Mid South Live Steamers, Paul Brien, had an engine from a Clark Steam Car that his uncle had given him. Paul passed away a few years ago at age 89....

Re: They just don't get it
Yeah, I've had people who simply couldn't believe that it actually runs on coal. I would open the firebox door and show them the roaring fire and say that's what's boiling the water. Then point to the pressure gauge, usually sitting around 110 PSI, and say, this is the steam pressure in the boiler f...

Re: FS 3 LRR Couplers 1-1/2" scale
Yes, these are VERY Old. I've seen a few of them around, usually only on equipment built back in the '60s. They can be modified slightly to work with more modern couplers. I was going to say that I know that Miller Backyard Railroad sold them. They also had an aluminum version at one time. I had a c...

Re: 1/2" scale CNR Boxcar
Where are you located? That would be good information for a potential buyer. Also, what are the truck side frames and wheels made from? Are they plastic or are they aluminum, brass, or Iron castings? That would determine a lot for me as to whether or not it could actually be used in a train on a lay...

Re: Modeltec June 1987
Yeah, some people in there that I haven't seen in a very, very long time. Art was not only an expert machinist and locomotive builder, he was, as his name implies, a fabulous artist. I've got a couple of prints of paintings that he did.

Re: Rebuilding the Central of Georgia #408
Has the casting spread in the back? Check it, and see if it is a lot looser in the back part of the travel than it is in the front part. If it is, then you might could heat and bend it back. You'd have to be very careful or it'll crack. I think that over time, those long, unsupported ears tend to sp...

Re: Designing and running compound steam
I would probably bring that 3.162" down to 3.125" (3 1/8th) or go up to 3.187" (3 3/16"). Good luck with building that. I think compounds are neat, although getting the starting valve to work properly might be a bit of a challenge. Have any pictures or drawings of what she'll loo...

Re: Quartering Axles
For a novice, the easiest way to quarter an axle is to put it in your mill vise, making sure that the vise is straight. Then use an end mill to mill the slot in one end, and use a woodruff key seat cutter to mill the slot in the other end. You'll have to pick up on the edge of the axle to find your ...
