Re: A question about engineering drawings....

Yes, I'm saving that rod for last. Well.... this thread has been fun but has drifted several miles away from the original post. I may start a thread on the live steam section about pumps as we may be leaving out folks who only check this site there and would benefit from such a discussion. Now off t...

Re: 20 and 30lb horizontial propane tanks - good deal

Well, I'm just reporting my experience. I have had folks decline to fill outdated tanks, and was told by the propane company that my horizontal tanks needed to be filled in the horizontal position. I've also had to drive clear across town to get tanks filled and to search for a place when out of tow...

Re: 20 and 30lb horizontial propane tanks - good deal

Something to think about when designing a car for propane tanks: The horizontal tanks are expensive compared to vertical ones. And you will own those tanks and have to have them re-certified after 12 years and then perhaps as often as every 5 years after that, and you'll have to pay for that certifi...

Re: A question about engineering drawings....

I'm going to try the o-ring method. One note I have from someone is to use the AFLAS o-rings. We'll find out if that's right. No castings — all bar stock. The first thing I did on this was to collect all the info I could find from magazine articles, comments on this forum, and notes from wherever, a...

Re: A question about engineering drawings....

What Bill and I are referring to is the air pump on steam locomotives that supplies compressed air for brakes and other uses. The single cylinder pump in the photo below, which is the big thing to the left of the cab door, is a complicated thing to make in 1/8 scale as there are many passages in the...

Re: A question about engineering drawings....

Like Bruce and Lew, I frequently just use a pencil. Back about 1957 I took a 10-week drafting class in junior high. I think I got a B. Here are a couple of mine from last week:

Re: A question about engineering drawings....

The 2-D program I use for the Mac is Cadintosh, for the outrageous sum of $32. And the guy that wrote it answers users emails himself! It works just great for 2-D. And for this pump project, I think you need to be the horologist. Lots of parts that have to align else it won't work. One of the first ...

Re: A question about engineering drawings....

.... It’s for me, not Atlas Copco, so THBBBBBT on industry standards! :) Me, too. I have an inexpensive 2-D program for my Mac that works great. I rarely draw parts but mostly use it to solve geometry problems on a specific part or to verify a dimension. I don't often draw but when I do it's in the...

Re: A question about engineering drawings....

This is only view of one part of about 20 parts on a single sheet with multiple views of each part. The arrowed notes for some of the parts frequently extend into what I would call the graphic space of another part, making it very cluttered and hard to follow. To make this gadget I photographed each...

Re: A question about engineering drawings....

Ah, Warmstrong, that makes a lot of sense. Different views based on the operations.

Here's the drawing that raised the question:
