You said you ordered the steel for your boiler but didn't mention what specification.
Using the right material is just as important as the welding process and weldor.

Re: Steam engine sheet metal chimney base replacement
You don't need a machinist, you need a tin knocker(sheet metal worker).

Re: Steam Dome Ball Valve Throttle
I have been heard to say 'If they had ball valves in the 1920's you'd have seen them everywhere on steam locomotives!'

Re: Prototype Poppet Valve Throttle
I have rebuilt and serviced full sized balanced poppet throttle valves for logging steam locomotives. They were very picky and difficult to make properly seal. I shudder to think what one in miniature would be like to make operate properly. My thoughts. RussN What Russ said! Russ, don't denigrate y...

Re: Steam Dome Ball Valve Throttle
When we assemble the throttle we put some blue Loctite on the nut so it won't come off accidentally.

Re: Boiler tube length question
Peter may be referring to girders as longitudinal stays. I much prefer to use rod stays rather than girders. It is much easier to calculate the area rod stays support.

Re: Boiler tube length question
We own, and frequently steam a 4 inch scale Fowler traction engine, In 20 yrs the copper tubes have moved slightly forward, they now, in the firebox tubeplate, can be seen to leave about 3/16 inch of tubeplate exposed, Strangely we have not seen nor experienced any leakage. Hope this is of interest...

Re: Boiler tube length question
I've been around at least a dozen 7.5 gauge coal fired engines with copper flues and zero issues. This is how Marty has built probably like 200 boilers and no issues that I've ever heard of. Just roll in the copper and be done. I have now built 390 boilers - 7 all copper, 10 steel with steel tubes,...

Re: Soldering - GAH!
In both soft-soldering and silver soldering you need to get the metal hot enough so the metal melts the solder, not the torch. I clean with Scotch-Brite, I even Scotch-Brite the solder before I apply it.
