Re: rusty compound slide ways - a death sentence?

Something else to try would to be to indicate the ID of the jaw surfaces - e.g. mount the chuck on the spindle, turn the chuck slowly by hand, and mike the jaws to see if they are out of true, at various diameters. Also, as Harold mentioned, inspect the flats to see if they exhibit wear that could c...

Re: Boiler welding advice.

re: boiler welding advice: as others have mentioned, this could be something to ask Ken and/or consult with a CERTIFIED welder regarding your corner layup. Looks like you have reached the stage where you really should seek expert advice. A good approach is to verify advice from people who have deep ...

Re: Seen this Locomotive on Ebay Today

Definitely old school, turn of the century - early 1920’s, - 3/4” or 1” scale build maybe… great restoration project maybe. The design and construction method of the pony truck is very similar to that of 1900 era miniature locomotive builds.

Seems like GitHub is as good as it gets as an active repository, during code development. But seems not really designed as a front end presentation for casual browsing by end users.

Re: Repairing the fratured spokes on the cast iron drive wheel

Thanks for the photos. Most helpful understanding what you are dealing with. This would be an easy repair by the shop I mentioned in an earlier post. Maybe worth a call to Mike- he’s been doing this kind of work for a long time… Two quick followup thoughts. Sweating on a steel tire at this point won...

Re: I may have made a mistake...

I bought a couple of low end, end mills from Grizzly once than actually bent in half when I first used them. Brilliant looking end mill. Absolute garbage steel. Sometimes these lower cost end mills are a crap shoot because of quality issues at the source - particularily the low end ones. Looks like ...

Hiya, welcome to Chaski, You could contact Daris Nevil ( daris@nevil.org), the current IBLS North American Secretary. Daris maintains a wiki where your work can be displayed. Their wiki can be found at IBLS.org. Go to the bottom of their main page and see sort of an index. they have around 960 pages...

Re: Repairing the fratured spokes on the cast iron drive wheel

Recommend sending the part to Mike at Cast Iron Repair, in Smokey Point, Washington (40 miles north of Seattle). Mike is the last remaining cast iron repair shop in the U.S. Mike has been in business for 45+ years and only does cast iron welding. The guy is something of a national treasure. I’ve tak...

Re: MTC G-12 For Sale

Nice looking restoration.looks like all the heavy lifting is already done on this. Decent price also. These G12’s make a nice 7.5” ga conversion. 6 volt ignition systems for gas engines were fairly common in the early 1950’s. My 1951 Farmal Cub had/has 6volt ignition. Usually pretty easy to convert ...

Re: Dealing with Rusty steel

I’ve found, I am always better off removing the rust and mill scale (first two layers you describe) prior to welding - or refinishing. Yes, you can weld lightly rusted steel, but it’s not really a proper welding technique, and will create porosity in the weld and extra surface spatter, unless you’re...

Re: Steam engine sheet metal chimney base replacement

Very cool project. That’s fairly thin material. So, maybe a Perfect opportunity to make up a jig and do the bends yourself. As others have said, a ball peen hammer could work wonders. Another approach would be to weld or silver solder a piece of material into the existing corroded space, and preserv...
