John, Take a look at this sketch D Valve exhibit.JPG The Blue is the steam chest and the red is the D Valve Some standards. The wall that should be .125, you said is .100.....thats OK as long as both walls are equal The D Valve must cover both steam ports exactly and the Radius inside of the D Valve...

The chief characteristic of "Spindle Oil" is no waxes.
Waxes cause a build up which eventually becomes crude in the bearing.
In a pinch, Hydraulic Oil works as a good spindle oil
10 Wt None Detergent Mineral oil is good and is found in Farm supply stores
