I would go for 1" tubes, my Challenger boiler tubes are 60" long and they will be 1".
The K36 also has 1" tubes on a shorter length, I have no problem making steam and you should not either although of your going to fire on gas I'm not sure how much gas your going to end up using?

Re: Scaling loads / pulling power
So my challenger is from memory about 30" high and 20 feet long. It is roughly one sixth full size as it's a sit in as opposed to sit on. I guess I'm more interested in knowing if it could pull a scaled weight of a 10'000 ton train which seems to work out at 20 tons if the above post is in the ...

Scaling loads / pulling power
Ok so some of you know that I have a 2.5" scale k36 and I'm building a 1/6th scale version of Challenger 3985. The recent videos of 4014 pushing the stalled freight and other excursions with the 3985 such as the heavy freight run have got me thinking. Is there a way to calculate what a scale 10...

Re: Regulator size
Gents,
Chris, Yes the Dobwalls big boy is in Auz, I think it has some issues and is in a private collection at the moment.
Bill - please excuse my ignorance, when you say PLAN, what are you referring to?

Re: Regulator size
Bill, James I'll await the final drawings and calcs from the boilermaker so I can determine the steam generation, I don't think I will be short.of steam to drive 4 off 3.5" cylinders as the k36 boiler is smaller.and produces plenty of steam for 2 off 4 inch cylinders, once a train is moving its...

Re: Regulator size
No the challenger is slightly oversize with a sit in tender, true scale.it.would fit on 9" track, hence why the boiler is 2 " bigger in diameter. It's based on the big boy locomotive in terms of scale that used to run on the Dobwalls forest railroad that closed down in 2006, a uk theme par...

Re: Regulator size
Thanks Bill,
I was thinking 1.25" initially so your figure seems to support that.
I will try and post some pics of the build so far
