Re: Prototypical looking hydrostatic lubricator?

I can't help but wonder how many guys who want one have ever worked with a real one. When they are working well they are great - but they don't always work well. Trying to refill them hot can be a challenge. Every engineer that worked with me at the HRR managed to spray hot oil all over the inside o...

Re: Successes and failures on the WC&OV

The rocker arms and rocker boxes on the Allen/Harpur locomotives are a never ending source of trouble. I now make the rocker boxes in steel with bronze bushings. I make the rocker arms in steel too, and TIG weld them to the shafts. Here are some pictures of one of my steel rocker boxes - no bushing...

Marty, good to hear from you. Put me down for a set next time to make some.
I don't make them for sale, just for my own locomotives.
Maybe Steve Alley would be interested in making them.

Re: Cucumber Coal

Dan did you get a copy of the analysis of the coal you bought? It is customary for the supplier to provide one when asked.
What you want to look at are the BTUs, the % of volatiles, and the ash fusion temperature.

Re: How to start Walschaerts Design as a beginner?

Baker Valve Gear does not travel the same distance either side of center between ports. Baldwin made the front and back bushings different lengths to compensate. They gave you a dimension to add to one end and subtract from the other end. Here is the diagram from Baldwin Standard Practices. Baker VG...

Re: Smokebox high temp paints

I use VHT header paint. Their SP998 Cast Iron is close enough to graphite for me. I spray it right on sandblasted steel. Once I fire the locomotive a couple of times I brush flake graphite on it.

Re: To pump or not to pump that is the question

An axle pump can be a pleasure to have when working properly. I have built 8 Allen locomotives but I have never piped them up the way the drawings show. I make the suction line 3/8" OD and the delivery lines 5/16" OD. I have a tee in the delivery line with one line going to a check valve and a bypas...

Last May we finished rebuilding a Winton Mogul,
I'm fond of the Winton moguls but the Green Goddess really looked sharp.
Thank you, Pat! I plan on painting my 2.5" scale Mogul a lot likt the Goddess.

Re: Pandemic Progress?

Last May we finished rebuilding a Winton Mogul, including a new boiler and slide valves.
Now we are finishing up reboilering a Bill Daney Pacific that was built in 1937.
Oh, and we built some boilers.

Re: Tommy Thompson’s 9” steam engines

Live Steam magazine for August 1972 had a two page article by Francis A. Orr titled 'McConnell Island Narrow Gauge'.
It has pictures of the 9" gauge Mogul, Tommy's boat, and the 18" gauge Porter.

Re: no cylinder pressure, steam exhaust out,

Squirt some oil in the steam chests then hook up the air and see what happens.
