Re: boiler wash

Ah . So Dave said that he used galvanized tube. That clarifies. Having worked with industrial boilers for a large chunk of my life, I generally recommend that water treatment be geared toward what you know is the chemical composition of the water. It sounds like you really care about the loco (as yo...

Re: Boiler, home made!

Still not a good idea. If you have HYDROTESTED many vessels, then you probably have a pump available to you.. Suggest you use it (pump) -> after it is determined what the safe operating pressure of said vessel is.. Thhs can be determined by the wall thickness of the outer shell, firebox wall and tub...

Re: 3/4" scale trucks

Sorry ..I was trying to refer to the entire trucks, not just the wheels.

Issa lotta trucks...

Sometimes it is faster to machine wheels from bar than castings. Good looking wheels..you obviously have it down to a science..

Re: boiler wash

Interesting Assume that it was Fred that advised use of galvanized tubing during initial construction? Answers to Marty's questions will provide proper responses to your initial query. As a matter of personal interest: Do you know the chemical make up of the water on which the loco is frequently run?

Re: Boiler, home made!

ABSOLUTELY NOT

NEVER PUT COMPRESSED AIR ON AN UNKNOWN VESSEL THAT HAS NOT BEEN HYDROTESTED.

to be somewhat blunt -> if you do not know better, then you should not be fooling around with a boiler and steam.

Re: boiler wash

Steel tubes are common...but galvanized water tubing ☹️

No idea how he would have made a roll fit into the tube sheets since galvanizing varies greatly in thickness.

Nylon shims...I understand and have actually seen that used by others to help reduce stiction in leaf springs.

Thx

The smaller scales are more fun than a barrel of anything larger.

Cleaning rust without warning the metal.

I have seen varieties used for rough sharpening or breaking sharp edges.

Re: Anyone up for a game of name that machining accessory?

In many case, special tools are created for a specific job. I have dozens for building steam pumps...but if you had never built one, you would have no idea regarding their use.

The last picture reminds me of what is called pumice -> but without holding it, probably a WAG.
