Re: Slide valve

Yeah, I'm with VGC on this. After 4 pages of posts we have one hard dimension to work with- .015 of lap and the supposition that 1/2" throw isn't enough.
I quoted hundreds upon hundreds of machining jobs during my career, there seems to be no hope of a successful ending here.

Re: 3/4" Raritan 2-4-0 build.

I saw the gentleman had posted on one of FB groups asking many of the same questions posted here... hoping for better answers. After a few days the posts stopped. Seemed awfully frustrated about screwing up parts. All I could think was- welcome to the world of machining.

Re: question i have

Hi PilotBug, I built the RRSC CP173 back in the mid 80's. With a full machine shop of well mantained machines it took me about 2 years of lunch hours and partial weekends to build. I found it to be an excellent design that ran like a Swiss watch off the bench. I quickly learned how little I liked ke...

Chloe cylinder bore question

Back when I built my CP173 I found about half way through I wished I had started a Chloe instead... I just liked the looks. Almost 40 years later I'm finally finding the time for another build. After a stalled start a couple months ago due to some surgery it's time to make chips. Chloe went up on he...

It may well be a timing issue and / or a valve sealing problem. So I'll surface the valve seats and valves. I want to hone / deglaze the bores and install new cast iron rings.
Anyone know where I can buy new rings 2.350" x .090" ?

Re: Ratchet wheel

Drill rod as gwdriver suggests. W-1 or O-1 tool steels are relatively inexpensive, harden and then temper to light straw color. Make a few extras and try to find them in 15 or 20 years when you need one.

Re: painting Fiberglass tender shell

Prep-Sol by Dupont is an excellent prepaint cleaner that removes silicone based releases, wax and oils of all types. Prep-Sol can be found in auto parts stores and auto paint dealers.
Any pics of your tender?

Re: Allen models Fitchburg Northern build by first timer

I am so jealous. Before I retired one of the departments I had under my supervision was the Toolroom which included a 7 x 14 foot working area, 5-axis, Omax waterjet. I did a lot of the shop programming for it plus I spent many free hours on my personal projects... all before starting another loco i...

Re: Share your special tools

Despite the looks of this I swear I really was a toolmaker and machinist my entire adult life. I wanted a little chop saw with decent guts for cutting leaf springs and heavy spring wire. I can take this outside and keep the fine dust and swarf far away from machines. Of course I could have bought an...

Re: Building a small loop around the house?

In early test runs I had some derailments on tight turns I loosened the nuts centering the springs and performance was far better... Do you know what the track radius and actual gauge numbers were when loosening the spring centering nuts helped with derailments? Unless the gauge can be opened up so...

The original (not quick set) JB Weld is good stuff and readily available.

Beautiful model! I always loved the look of the CP Huntington, looks like a toy designer did the design.

I didn't see this posted yet, here's the build thread on the CP Huntington that was on DLS last year- http://www.chaski.org/homemachinist/vie ... hp?t=93102
