Re: My first engine, finished!
just a scale touch for the most part. The copper wire is to hold it in place in case the crazy glue fails at temperature. Thanks! Much as I suspected. The scale touch-----what a difference that makes in a model, taking it closer to the prototype in appearance. Very well done. Even patina seems to m...

Re: My first engine, finished!
I like it! Yep! I do, too! I'm curious about the manifold shown in the first photo. Has a rather unusual appearance. Possibly a fabric overwrapped with copper wire? H Thanks Harold! The manifold you are looking at is the inlet manifold. I can't quite remember what the name of the stuff is called, b...

Re: My first engine, finished!
Thanks Dick and Andy!
Charles- I suppose the parts look similar, but mine are just a simple milling job from some 1/4" brass plate and bolted to some 3/16" steel keystock. Andy's are a work of art!!

Re: My first engine, finished!
Thanks for the nice words guys! It has been run on steam and air (with lots of oil). Valve setting was a bit off, but it ran well all things considered. Havent had chance to run it since adjusting the valves.

My first engine, finished!
Just thought I would share a few photos of my new engine- my first engine built from start to finish, and to my own design. 5/8" bore and stroke, almost entirely made from scrap metal in my bin. This is about the height of a beer can, and is designed to go in a 1/6th scale R/C boat. This hobby ...

Re: Building a 4.5 in scale Foden Steam Truck in New England
I still am surprised by how few people here in North America have chimed in about playing with traction engines. I would think not having to rely on having track would be very appealing to a lot more people. Hopefully over the years this thread and one day bringing the engine to shows will serve to...

Re: Paint question
Keep us posted with results, lots of good info so far. Im looking to use a red oxide primer of some sort to simulate anti-fouling paint on the bottom of my model steam boat project.

Re: Northern 4-8-4 Build 3/4”
I'm no expert with small drills but I also made some 1-72 castle nuts for the connecting rod big ends on my little boat engine. I made a jig to hold the con rod pin so I could use a tiny centre drill to locate the hole accuratley in the milling machine. Then transferred it over to the dremel drill p...

Re: IS our hobby dying in Canada?
Sadly, I think all "hands-on" hobbies are dying out. When I was into R/C airplanes, the pre-built ones were just coming out. Now, thats virtually all you can buy.... When I built my last airplane, the guy at the hobby store was amazed I was buying sheets of balsa to cut myself! Then on to ...
