Re: How to start Walschaerts Design as a beginner?

I have an erecting drawing for the Walschaerts version of the loco so that gives the main dimensions. I have bought the long-frame Baker gear castings from Roger Goldmann so I am using his dimensions for the basic mechanism and the cylinders I have were poured for Henry Greenly's 4-8-4 somewhere aro...

Re: How to start Walschaerts Design as a beginner?

"I can't imagine the original designers of the LE locomotives or RRSC mikado etc went to quite this length of charting valve movements when designing the gear on their locomotives." It is only thanks to Charlie Dockstader's software that I can produce these charts. The difficult bit is und...

Re: How to start Walschaerts Design as a beginner?

Thanks for your thoughts Bill. I am not quite sure how to allow for wear. I guess there will be lost motion with the effect that the events will be delayed so I will lose lead and get reduced port opening. That is the sort of thing that will creep up on me with usage and I won't notice until I give ...

Re: How to start Walschaerts Design as a beginner?

Many thanks for those. I shall study and digest! In the mean time, I have tried doubling the lead from 0.015" to 0.030" by shortening the valve at both ends reducing the lap as you suggested. This is what I get in forward gear: https://i.postimg.cc/44c8Vskr/007-Steam-Forward-Steps.png This...

Re: How to start Walschaerts Design as a beginner?

Thank you, Moron. That is exactly the sort of understanding I have been looking for! I shall look forward to seeing the equations.

Re: How to start Walschaerts Design as a beginner?

Hi VGC. Thank you for taking an interest. Here is the reverse gear oval diagram for equalised lap. https://i.postimg.cc/K4XKsNW6/004-Oval-Reverse-Steps.png The exhaust ports are still biased by 5% of stroke away from the mid point and I am getting more valve stroke at one end than the other. That, I...

Re: How to start Walschaerts Design as a beginner?

Hello Friends! I am still playing with this and looking at the lap at the moment. As I said before, I have used a Bilgram diagram to work out the laps and came up with different values front and rear. They gave me this chart which has the same settings as above: https://i.postimg.cc/tCS4PSDr/003-Ova...

Re: How to start Walschaerts Design as a beginner?

Hello Moron! Thank you so much for taking the trouble to reply. I really value your input. Not being able to get around and talk to people at the moment is a killer! The prototype is the Frisco 1500 class but an early one with Baker gear. Baker gear is pretty rare this side of the pond and very few ...

Re: How to start Walschaerts Design as a beginner?

Hello friends! Please may I stick my oar in and ask for some advice? I am in the process of laying out Baker gear for a 1 1/2" scale mountain loco and am using Mr Dockstader's software. As has been discussed earlier, it is not instantly obvious to use but I have persisted and am getting the han...

Re: Building the Frisco 1522

Sorry. When I said 'in the mail' above, there is no implied criticism. it is the current conditions delaying things!
