Re: Air over water boiler test?

I'm admittedly not a live steam expert, but have several years of experience in an exchanger shop. We always pressure tested the exchangers in a tank of HOT water. Every once in awhile, we'd get a return with a complaint of coolant loss, and find it was tight when cold but leaked when hot. To not ha...

Re: Please post your thoughts

I often end up spending a significant amount of time searching for something I saw in the past, many times to no avail. Other times I am able to google search and end up finding the Chaski thread that I am looking for even though the Chaski search didn't work or turned up 109 pages of threads. I not...

Re: EMD F7 in SCALE

I may replicate and laser cut the parts for the brake linkage and shoes for my S-12, but only for looks. We'll let the disc brakes do the real work. The linkage for adjusting the brake shoe position is jewelry-like in scale and prone to damage in handling or derailments otherwise, and I think there ...

Re: Switch construction rail lengths

East coast RR's often had curved diamonds, frogs, and all kinds of weird stuff in terms of track, having to fit it all in between existing buildings/industries where no one ever imagined needing a 300' turn radius for a train. It's rather fascinating to do google image searches for turnouts and look...

Re: PVC Tender tanks

+1 Glenn. They can probably find what they need and not have to make it. I got my grey water tank for my last boat from these guys: https://www.tank-mart.com/plastic-tanks/ They have oodles of different shapes sizes and capacities to choose from, even PDF drawings attached to many of the items. I go...

Re: 12” gauge DRGW Inspired RR

Currently looking into having a Nathan manifold designed and printed, have to see what the estimated cost will be. I’ve considered adding an compresser and airtank to try one of Mega Blast PVC train horn’s P3. He makes some great sounding horns that are tuned correctly. What bicycle horn did you ge...

Re: 12” gauge DRGW Inspired RR

Very nice work, it's coming along. I really like the "cast" look on those handles. I was able to find a metal bicycle horn on amazon that was very close to scale size for the long single chime used on many an S-12. I threw the rubber squeezy part away and will just need to make a bracket for it and ...

Re: EMD F7 in SCALE

I've seen that rotor but they are only 1/8" thick, I was looking for something about 3/8" thick. Tolomatic offers rotors up to 1/2 inch thick in a variety of diameters, many of which are available with keyed hubs. They, of course, also have the calipers to with those rotors. I see no reason why you...

Re: EMD F7 in SCALE

I've seen that rotor but they are only 1/8" thick, I was looking for something about 3/8" thick. Being I'm looking at 2-tons of train that's really going to want to go downhill on my 2-3% grades, I've got to have more robust brakes. I'm leaning towards using Honda Civic rear calipers which spec a mi...

Re: Steam turbine generator

Look into the 3-phase AC drone motors, they have tons of options on amazon and those things are high output for their size and weight, and turn over easily. Yes there will some circuitry involved in converting it to DC, but I think the output would be decent. As others have posted, there are all kin...

Any more details on the disc brake rotors? That's one of my last things to tackle for my trucks....aside from getting my locomotives wheels on the lathe.

Re: A new track in Maine

^^^
I would think adding guardrails inside of the "short rails" outside the diamond would suffice, at a minimum.
