Re: Tender brakes air pressure and leverage

Carl is spot on! My Ten Wheeler also has separate brake controls for the locomotive, and the tender plus cars behind. Prototypical. The engine brake is steam actuated; the brakes behind are vacuum from an ejector. When sitting at the station, I can keep the engine brakes applied which consume no st...

Re: How to start Walschaerts Design as a beginner?

Description in STEAM LOCOMOTIVE STUDY COURSE and original patent design and other pieced together sources There are many things not clearly defined in either...hence the iterative design approach Once worked out works fine...as long as the driver to which the crank is attached does not have any ver...

Re: How to start Walschaerts Design as a beginner?

you are correct n assuming that you are not going to get the full intended valve travel from the 'system'...even if you allow for 0.0005" on every pin bearing involved in the motion, you will be surprised at how much valve motion you are going to lose. the whole world is a compromise... if you...

Re: How to start Walschaerts Design as a beginner?

Thank you, Moron. That is exactly the sort of understanding I have been looking for! I shall look forward to seeing the equations. Steve Happy to help! Here are some of the equations that I will write out. First one is a simple one for determining cut-off in full gear. Keep in mind this equation wi...

Re: How to start Walschaerts Design as a beginner?

Steve, to increase cut-off (percentage), you have to reduce the lap. It’s mostly a relationship between the valve and the ports in the cylinder moreso than it is increasing valve travel. There’s 2 ways to do this, 1: reduce the lap (equally on both sides) and leave the rest as is. The downside to th...

Re: How to start Walschaerts Design as a beginner?

Hello friends! Please may I stick my oar in and ask for some advice? I am in the process of laying out Baker gear for a 1 1/2" scale mountain loco and am using Mr Dockstader's software. As has been discussed earlier, it is not instantly obvious to use but I have persisted and am getting the ha...

Re: Scale

I might be wrong in this and I don’t know the exacts, but basically it’s full size 2 foot or 18inch mining gauge (or something similar) to run on G gauge track. At least that’s what I’m getting from it

Re: Rebuilding the Birch 3/4" NYC Pacific

Love this explanation on the combination lever design. Would love to see more lessons on designing the whole valve gear. I’ve been reading up on it, mostly from the greenly/Evans book and a few books published back in the working steam days. Each one explains it a little differently, but for me it s...

Re: Allen Consolidation vs Ten Wheeler

I am building an Allen consolidation and am loving it so far. I have seen one in action and for it’s small size it actually pulls quite a bit and has a decent bark. Looking forward to finishing mine. The building can be just as fun as the finished product

Re: Power Reverser questions

The power reverse on the full size locomotives used air with steam as emergency. The main type of power reverse gears were the ALCO gears. Starting with Type E, which had the air delivery pipes physically piped in. This was later cast into the cylinder itself creating the Type G, which for a while w...
