Re: How To machine one piece axle box

There is plenty of material to work with the core is ~.28 smaller than the finished dimension for the bearing. The adjustment nut is a different story. the LE drawing does not give an ID for the threaded area. I found a calculator online that indicates the thread depth is only 0.021". If this i...

Re: How To machine one piece axle box

Still procrastinating but getting closer to starting this. I was looking at the webpage suggested by hudson above and it appears they machined the external profiles before machining the bearing pocket. (I am also curious what type bearings they used) I am thinking of just dusting external surfaces t...

Re: How To machine one piece axle box

I know about the new design and agree they would be easier and maybe better. What I like about this hobby is the challenge in figuring out the "how to". I am not a machinist so success in building an engine and solving the construction problems is satisfying and rewarding.

Re: How To machine one piece axle box

I just got the drawings and have a few questions. I will probably start with Bearing Adjusting nut by boring and threading a piece of stock long enough to make eight rings. I can then part them off and use them as a gauge when doing the internal threads. My question is what to use for material? A 3&...

LE contact info

Does anyone know what is happening with LE? Were they affected by the flooding on the west coast? I have been trying to reach them via phone and e-mail no response.

Re: Packing material

Is there a difference between using graphite tape (Mcmaster PN 9481K11) and using square packing (PN 97675K4). Will both perform the same in installation and use?

Re: Packing material

Hello Marty, I have just finished installing a boiler on my Allen Ten Wheeler that you built for me back ~2017. I fired it up on the test stand today and the throttle rod leaked terribly. I had repacked it with cotton/graphite string . I removed the gland and the string turned rock hard. I don't rem...

Re: How To machine one piece axel box

I don't have the drawings yet but the procedure hoppercar described above is what I was considering except I was going to chuck the slug. Mounting it on the faceplate is probably a better idea and more secure. I did my drivers this way by using a chuck arbor in the spindle and turning the Jacobs end...

Re: How To machine one piece axel box

The problem I anticipate is turning the part to do the other side and getting the surfaces to line up.. One solution would be to do it in one setup such as mounting it on the lathe carriage.
