Re: Converting an Atlas 12" x 36" Lathe for Metric Threading

Yes, that would be an improvement to the crank.... good idea, but I don't do enough threading to build a "Version 2"....

Re: Converting an Atlas 12" x 36" Lathe for Metric Threading

Incidently, if you are doing something tiny, and need a 0.25mm pitch, you can get that by using the Metric setup (sliding gear in) and selecting the finest feed (0.042") setting (E- IN - #9).... If you need a 0.2 mm pitch, you can approximate that by using the coarsest feed with the sliding gea...

Re: Converting an Atlas 12" x 36" Lathe to Metric Threading

I reinstalled the idler assembly by sliding the bolt head into the adjusting slot, and slid it over so that the new 52T idler gear was in mesh with the input gears of the QCGB.... It is important to adjust the mesh of the gears so that there is just a bit of "backlash" between then.... not...

Converting an Atlas 12" x 36" Lathe for Metric Threading

I have a 40ish year old Atlas 12 x 36 Lathe with the Quick Change Gear Box, and of course it only does Imperial threads, from 4 to 120 TPI.... A couple of weeks ago, I found out on the Internet that by replacing two gears you can do all the common Metric threads from 0.5 mm to 6 mm pitch, and keep t...

Re: 5C Collet Mount on Atlas Lathe Milling Attachment

I'm not too concerned.... I would like it better if the entire clamp bolt was on the flat, but then the tightening collar would interfere with the vice.... The C/L of the bolts is well inside the flat on the hex (and of course the square isn't an issue) and way more than half the flat of the hex is ...

Re: 5C Collet Mount on Atlas Lathe Milling Attachment

Milling the hex block would have made the flats narrower, and they already were too narrow to clamp in the vice on the milling attachment, hence the need for the slot.... There is plently of thickness compared to the depth of the slot I cut, and it's not like I'm going to be selling the milling atta...

5C Collet Mount on Atlas Lathe Milling Attachment

This is probably old hat for many of you, but I needed a way to index round parts at 60*, 90*, and 120* for drilling and milling.... I purchased a set of 5C Collets and a pair of holders for them, a Hex and a Square.... http://i378.photobucket.com/albums/oo221/rsterne/Parts%20for%20Sale/IMG_2999_zps...

Re: Questions on 5C Collets

However, if they have an internal thread of 1.041" OD, I'm guessing that anything over 1" does NOT have a full diameter through hole?....
