Re: Question about wheels

In my opinion, the best resource for circa 1890 locomotive design is "Modern Locomotive Construction" by Myer. I have a hard copy reprint, but you can also find it on archive.org. It's a bit later that your prototype, but has a lot of detailed drawings that I haven't found anywhere else. &...

Re: Question about wheels

As for traction, it's obtained by weight on the drivers. Plan to make parts heavy if you can, for example, a piece of 3/4" or 1" steel plate for the cab floor. My CP-173 has a simulated air tank under the cab which is filled with lead and someday I may fill the sand dome with lead.

Re: Question about wheels

I found mention of fabricated drive wheel in Live Steam, April, 1985. Unfortunately, that year isn't on the shelf where it should be. Also see if you can find the book or Live Steam articles for Kozo's Heisler. He uses a lot of fabrications and I think he did the wheels that way. He gives excellent ...

Re: Question about wheels

An option that I would use is fabricated wheels. That construction would be more robust than cast wheels and may well be easier than making patterns and finding someplace to cast them. They are made of outer rings, spokes, and a center shaped to include the crank pin boss. Silver solder, braze, or w...

Re: ID these small lights

I suspect the operator of the plastic injection machine had just changed from red to clear and all of the red hadn't yet been cleared from the system. Two are really clear, one is slightly pink, and the other is more pink, all on the same sprue. But I like "Barbie Train" better. (My daught...

Re: Looking for Signal Castings

Somewhere in deepest recesses of my mind I think there is a memory of a lady live steamer who had her own locomotive that she painted pink. Maybe an LE Atlantic and probably at least 45 years ago. I never saw it, but certainly would have clearer memories of it if I had.

Re: ID these small lights

RRSC classification lamps from my jewelry box where they have resided since 2005. I don't have any idea what's with the pink lenses. Maybe someone with prototype experience can tell us when pink lenses are used.

Re: Looking for Signal Castings

Yep. I must be the only one left. Touchy and irritating interacting adjustments on a Collins modem from back in the days when it took a full height 17" equipment rack to hold just two modems.

Re: Looking for Signal Castings

Too busy with a 10+ year backlog of hobby projects, the energy of a 75-year-old, and putting in radiant under floor heat in the house with a new mod-con boiler! My thought when I saw the cross bucks was that they would duplicate really nice on a 3D printer. Once drawn the printing wouldn't take a lo...

I can't be of any help, but this sure is an interesting set of drawings.

Winton Castings V2.0 (Sold)

I'm not sure why I bought these on Ebay at least 20 years ago. I think they are all Winton. I've never had a Winton engine or expected to get one. Some are unsullied castings, some may be junk, some may need to be bushed and new holes put in, I just don't know. What you see is what you get. To allow...
