Re: Name the Mystery Character
guilty as charged. sitting in my favorite riding car position (which is not up-side-down )
the loco on the cover is the one I am riding behind in this picture. My neighbor who rides shotgun with me on trips is behind the throttle.
It is not MY loco, it is a loaner from a VERY GOOD FRIEND that weekend (I am merely the loco's winter caretaker since I put a new boiler on her 6 years ago when the old one started weeping)
is a unique piece of design - 4 bolts / 10 minutes and the entire boiler / cab assembly / all piping just pops off.
chassis and boiler then sit in separate carriers to make transport easier for us old farts with bad backs.
all loads into my Subaru Forester without too much squeezing.

Too many things going on to bother listing them.

Well, hmm. Normally I would invert the photo but not this time!

Actually, since everything in Oz is upside-down, gravity works the opposite as it does here. It pushes the loco UP against the rails and keeps the engineer in place as well.
Re: Name the Mystery Character
Great Article Bill. The Loco is very nice, well done.

Re: Name the Mystery Character
like I said, not my loco...was built in 1966 -> all I did was put a boiler on it as a replacement almost-in-kind as a favor to a very good friend (now deceased - B&O Bob).
His father designed and built her.
see the southern valve gear?
interesting exercise in itself the copper block on the left is the chassis / smokebox interface
hole on left is steam in from boiler
hole on right is water in from pump
hole in center is steam out to stack
holes in corners are 1/4-20 hold down bolts that come in from the inside of the smokebox
very slick....

Here is the original image of Budha Bill so folks don't have to turn their computer monitors upside down and a close-up look at the hand-painted art on the tender.
