Baker Valve Gear

Post by jscarmozza »

Can the Baker Valve Gear be used with an outside admission D valve, if so what has to be changed from the inside admission arrangement? Thanks.

John, if you check out the Friend’s / Yankee Shop 3/4” and 1” scale Atlantics, you will see that they all use Baker valve gear with slide valves.
Basically you reverse the angle of the eccentric crank.

the short answer is yes,, what engine do you have in mind for this?
If it is not live steam. its not worth it.

I have a 1” LE Atlantic project and was thinking about substituting a Baker Valve gear for the Walschaerts. Still in the thinking stage. Making the yoke and the various components without plans may be above my pay grade, all I have is the Locomotive Cyclopedia and Nelson’s book as guides.

How are you doing Kieth?

I have one of two prints for the Baker gear for the 1" Atlantic/Pacific. I haven't been able to track down the other one.

Reviewing my comms indicates that there might be only one print. I'll evaluate the print and see if it's a standalone print.

This will not work. You also must exchange the vertical order of both upper parts connected to the combination lever. This will change the vertical position of the Baker linkage and the parts around that.

With automatic pre-optimization, DXF export, etc.

There are dozens of Baker prints available, but that only gets the baker linkage.

No matter what, you are going to have to work out your own dimenions for the combination to match your valve design.

It is not rocket science...been around for 120 years or so - and even I can get it correct (occasionally).
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

As Keith said - I have a 3/4" Friends Atlantic with baker gear and slide valves and it runs just fine.

What VGC says is also correct, the combination lever has the linkage swapped at the valve rod in this configuration.

Thanks, I’ll try to accumulate as much information as I can and then decide which way to go.

The Allen 2-8-0 has Baker/slide valves.

I have Gene Allen’s original copy of Shops, Shed and Road by LBSC. It is creased and a touch grimy on the pages for the Baker valve gear. Gene’s version is scaled up from Curly’s original.

Absolutely, though it is relatively uncommon due to when Baker became popular and the rising popularity of spool (piston) valves at the same time.
The gist of it is that using the long frame Baker, you turn the Baker frame & mechanism around 180 degrees, thus reversing the motion. Note the eccentric crank follows the main crank pin by 90 degrees. I took a number of detailed pictures of the only narrow gauge 2-8-0 I have ever seen with Baker gear, the 30" gauge Alder Gulch #12 in Montana.
