This material is some kind of stainless the was found on one of many dumpster dives at my employment probably 25 years ago. It turned nice. 2.5 down to 1.5 for brake pistons.

Gotta love having scrap steel laying around as it comes in handy.
Re: 2 1/2" scale 4-6-0 build
Found time to machine the brake pistons this morning. Jim

Re: 2 1/2" scale 4-6-0 build
Piston pressed on rod. Waiting on springs.
Turned two centers crossed drilled 1 reamed the other tapped
Cut a brass slung to go between the rod and set screw

What's the device in the bottom pic used for?
Re: 2 1/2" scale 4-6-0 build
Trammel for the center to center of axles for laying out side rods. Jim

Ah, ok. Nice job on the brake pistons.
Re: 2 1/2" scale 4-6-0 build
Well these brake cylinders have been full of learning opportunities. First had to move them forward and while trying to install o ring on piston and into the cylinder it was to tight for my liking. I used the print dimensions which fell in line with standard charts but was to tight. After digging I found some great info in Winton Brown engineering info and online found Model Engineers handbook .
Rechucked the cylinders and placed a 15 degree bevel on both ends. Then the piston rod with piston in a collet to deepen the o ring grove to reduce the squeeze. You can teach old dogs new tricks. Jim

Ordered pins when I ordered springs for the brake cylinders. Hope to finish up the breaks today. Jim

A lot of fiddle work but the brakes are complete. Not yet. The center bent rods are touching the eccentric straps on the low oscillation.

Re: 2 1/2" scale 4-6-0 build
Not a lot progress lately but here is some shots.
The brake shoes for the tender were made from scrap aluminum cut off blocks I have enough for one or two more cars . The shoes were machined like the engine shoes with a 2.5 degree taper. The hangers are temporary. out of aluminum to find the height The brake beams are fabed but I need the cylinders to continue. Jim

More scrap 4x4 3/8 thick angle.
This is the beginning of a dummy rod. Jim
