It was in good shape, and removing the handle is how you get it out.... already did that....

I repaired my lathe today.... Bored out the quill and inserted a new Acme threaded brass bushing with Loctite 638.... It turns out that the difficulty I had drilling those Metric bolts was partly the threads in the process of stripping.... The repaired lathe drilled them no problem, with HSS drill bits.... ::)

Thank you to all here for your advice, much appreciated.... 8)

Bronze is one of the few metals that works well sliding against other metals (cast iron is another one).

Joe Nelson's "So you want to build a steam locomotive" had a great chart showing which metals against which metals were bad to good. Worst was probably aluminum on aluminum.

Bronze was good with everything, IIRC.

Look here for a similar chart (and lots of other related info, too) if you don't happen to have that book.

That's useful, but I think that Nelson's chart took into account that some materials were bad because they galled.

I think I need to make my next pistons out of diamond :-)
