Welding a rock drill

Post by Sandman north »

I have attempted to weld a rock drill shaft 7/8 diameter with no luck. The customer said it ran for about 40 seconds then broke right in half see the picture.

I pre heated to about 400 degrees F and after welding heated it to 800 degrees F then let it air cool.
I used ER 630 stainless and it was tig welded.

Can this be welded ?

How would we do it differently next time?

Looks like no penetration, just a weld around the periphery.

I'd V it pretty deep, drill and pin it for alignment, and TIG weld it using Hastelloy W filler rod.

Operating machines is perfectly safe......until you forget how dangerous it really is!

sleeve it and weld the ends of the sleeve to the shaft as Glenn described....

or cut losses and have friend purchase a new one
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

If this is an impact drill I think you're out of luck.

I agree with Bill; the shaft has to be very hard and tempered to a certain ductility, welding it is unlikely to be successful.
A sleeve might work, but even that would be a good trick.

If you sleeve it, cut a V into both ends of the sleeve so that you get a longer weld line and it's not all in one circumference creating a stress riser.
