OK- so a bit of storytime. Once on a time, we had a 2" traction engine. ImageTEmilton89 by Peach James, on Flickr

Which had an injector (11 oz/min, IIRC), and a pump. And woe betold you if you tried to USE the injector, it was a piece of crap for boiler inspector benefit only really. So, it was engine driven pump, or start again. Now, the pump is located on the LHS behind the wheel, is vertical, and the filter is immediately before the pump. If you had floaties in the water, you had to pull the wheel to get at the filter, and likely to get at the balls too. Not too hard, the wheels were held on by bolted collers. One could do this with steam up, if one was prepared to get a bit warm handed doing so. There's another part of the !@#!@# with this, in that there really wasn't a filler on the boiler, because the safety valves were on top of the block, after the superheater. So, if one had a problem with the pump, one had a rash choice to make- either start RIGHT NOW at pulling the wheel off, getting at the pump (and cleaning the ball valves), then pumping water in, or quitting usually for the day. Because even a determined 12 year old me wasn't going to hand turn the engine enough to refill the boiler if the water was out the bottom of the glass. (if you did get that low at home, of course, we'd use air to spin the engine to run the pump to fill the boiler).

The fun of smaller engines.

If said engine was going to be transported far by being carried, the rear wheels came off for said transport. Those of you who are grand scale modelers- take a close look at the rear wheels. Perhaps you can identify what they had come from :) . (I know what they were off !)

always thought a 6 inch scale or even 9 inch scale would make a neat size for a traction engine. Basically the size of a old Ford 8n or massey 135.
