D&M 048-700115 Chopper Driver

Post by dorin »

I have been gutting and rebuilding an old D&M CNC mill.
There are 3 stepper drivers numbered 048-700115, Chopper Driver.
They look in remarkably good condition, nice and clean...with no ugly burns!

Being a cheapskate I would to try and use them...and the original steppers if possible.

The inputs are labeled D C + -

How to those equate to Step Direction EN 5V as described on my breakout board?

Thoughts? Perhaps being cheap is not an option!

Mike, can you post a good picture of the driver board?

(My suggestion, is that you are ahead in the long run if you just buy a Geck G540 4 axis controller, it has Break Out, Charge pump, 4 stepper drivers, and the ability to control a spindle motor all wrapped into one package. That said, if you indeed can find the step/dir inputs then you can get those going. I did so on a Labvolt lathe some time ago.)

I got a very nice note with some information on the device.
Suspicion is the board is based on a L298 driver. With the datasheet on that driver and an ohm meter, I think it should be
ok to figure out.

Here is the picture that was sent me.
Not mentioning the fellow's name for his privacy, but he give me some great input that I appreciate.

Now the big question is if it is worth the effort!

Mike, if you have the info, give it a go. I was hoping to see the two connectors. My suspicion is that one connector has the +\- 5VDC power supply input along with the Step and Direction inputs. You generally also need the power supply input and the output for the stepper motor.

Marty,
If you look at the picture, C2 has the D C, +/-.

I am very lucky on my project, the motor is still connected and the stepper motor power supply is still connected!

Next Friday I will take a stab at ohm'ing those pins out.

The guy I am working with has 4 or 5 of these things. A friend of mine has given me a pile of XP touch screen computers from a medical application that run XP and have parallel ports. So if all goes well, the cheap parallel breakout port, MACH III for those who have a license, or Linux CNC for those who don't, and the machines will be live.

This first one we are working on is the biggest wreck of the group....figuring we you break eggs you have to make omelets, and this one had plenty of broken eggs!

Indeed. You didn't mention you still had a motor and supply connected. That should help out.
Mach 3 can run in demo mode and run up to 500 lines of code. Plenty to test with.

Yes, the fact that the motors and power supply are still connected is sort of an important hunk of information.
Sorry about leaving those out!

Well the motors turned out to be junk, so time to get some replacement motors.

I think I might just replace everything now! New controller, drivers, motors...and not worry about the system being haunted by old parts.

Power supply is going to stay though...it is a beautiful power supply!

How many volts does the power supply put out? Any markings on the original motors so you can find specs and closely match up the replacements?

Suggest Gecko G540 if your computer has a parallel port

Friday evening I had a chance to yank everything out.
I added the steppers I had hanging around plus a new controller.
The touch screen computer is from a surplus device.
All three axis were moving for the first time in years.

Admittedly the steppers may be a bit small, but it was good to see some success.

Next weeks installment will have a video.
This is setup at a friends shop...so I can't work everyday on it.

So next week:
I will have the spindle motor connected and spinning!
I will have the software tuned...so it knows how many times to spin per inch.
I will try to get limit switches on it too...but for sure an emergency stop switch.

Perhaps I might even carve a hunk of something!
