Driver wheels profile

Post by Emfinger »

I have a IBLS wheel gauge, but I'm not sure how to use it. Is there a how to sheet somewhere?

Thank you
Tom

The first photo is shown in the proper position. The back (side with the tounge) of the gauge is held parallel with the back of the wheel.

This wheel does not exhibit the typical wear pattern. Usually, the flange wears so that it is narrower/thinner than when it was new. These flanges look wider/thicker than the gauge you are testing it against. Looks to me that the wheel was made that way. Is this 7.25” or 7.50” track gauge? Also, the tread is exceptionally wide. Is this a narrow gauge (2.5” scale) loco?

Were those two pictures of the same wheel?

Profile for 1.5 and 1.6 should matter not.

I personally like wide tires.. esp on center drivers. Helps keep from falling through on tangents.

Are you sure?
I recall being at the Northwest Live Steamers Track (Molalla, Oregon) many years ago when a builder unknown to me showed up with a steamer. The profile of his wheels was such that he couldn't operate on their track. If memory serves, his flanges were wide and square.
