Purchasing 1st project and mystery chassis included

Post by bushav »

Thanks for letting me join! I have taken up learning the art of maching. This year I purchased and restored a 1941 LeBlond Regal 13" lathe. Of course I had to add a Bridgeport Series 2 to the shop afterwards. A neighbor built and operated a live steam railroad in my neihborhood for years so I have always dreamed of building a locomotive.

Today I inspected a local project and think I will pull the trigger tomorrow. It is Little Engines 4-6-2 Pacific in 1" scale. The work done on it is excellent. Along with it comes a 4-8-4 in similar stage of completion but absolutely no paperwork/plans with the second project. I'm getting both of them for $3k. I think it is worth the price, but I am a neophyte just learning.

Can anyone identify what this 3/4" scale 4-8-4 is? I am interested in finding out more about it. It is surplus to my needs so it will be sold to help out with the Pacific purchase.

Wow, those are two complex engine designs to jump into for your first (and perhaps second) build! I wish you luck. It can be done, but the road ahead will not be easy.

Sorry, I've been reading the FAQ and trying to figure out how to make the pic visable. You can copy/paste the html for the time being. It's a shared image on my ICloud. Trying Google Drive now.

You are quite right. I've spent the last six months making tools to make more tools! Owned an aircraft maintenance shop for 25 years and have restored several classic cars (68 Buick Skylark, 67 Karman Ghia, 41 Buick Special). Like your tag line says "you can't learn to swim without getting your feet wet".

I realize this is a multi year project but the 4-6-2 is all there and has the castings and plans. I think it being local and available is too good to pass up. Saving it from obscurity or being melted down has its benefits also. I can't wait to learn more about this hobby.

Any chance of a picture showing the side of the 4-8-4? It is hard to identify from the head on view, we can’t see details.
It does look like nice workmanship. Off hand I would suggest just keeping the 4-8-4. Without drawings and other parts such as the side and main rods and valve gear, I’m afraid there won’t be a great deal of demand for it.

The original Little Engines had a 3/4” scale 4-8-4. Only saw one part built chassis- had some similarities from what I recall, but it’s been a long time.

Pictures taken up on a table so we could get a good side view would be helpful.
From what I can see I would say NOT Little Engines as the trailing truck appears different and it has a cast rear cradle, not fabricated from channel iron.

It may be based on the Little Engines design, but with modifications.

I was going to say the same thing!
