Steam loco wishlist (If only)!

Post by PRR5406 »

If I had been born rich instead of handsome I would have a couple of steam locomotives built for myself. One would be a Long Island Rail Road G5s, the other would be a Canadian National X-10T 4-6-4T suburban tank loco.
The LIRR loco would be because I remember the last of them in service, and my Dad was a involved in the preservation of the last two. These engines had pull, and bulk, and were simply perfect for the work to which they were assigned.
The CNR 4-6-4T was fairly small, but the compact design made them perfectly useful for tight radii, economical to operate, and easy to transport. They were bi-directional and could handle short trains with speed. Just beautiful lookers and distinctly Canadian.

If money and materials were not problematic, which design(s) would you add to your personal collection?

What a good subject,
Ok here is mine - 7 1/4 K36, done that and built one!
7 1/4 3985 Challenger - almost there !

Then maybe a D&RGW C19 and then an F7 or some sort of A + B unit

So many unique locomotives that I don't believe have been done in 7.5 gauge live steam.

2.5 scale- EBT 2-8-2, ETWNC 4-6-0, 3t climax?
1.6 – B&O EM1, Reading T1, C&O 4-8-2, Erie 2-8-4, NYC 4-8-4, L&N 2-8-4, PRR T1

The list could go on and on for pretty unique designs that haven't been built.

I have CNR X-10 No. 46 in 3/4" scale, built by my grandfather in the 1940s. I believe it is the only example of that type ever built as a livesteamer.

It ran at Danvers MA and the Lachine track in Montreal.

Is it operable today? I'd like to see pictures of the locomotive, no matter the condition. I suppose it's too much to ask in the original drawings for his locomotive are in your possession?

Thank you!

I've seen pics of a Bangor and Aroostook mogul that appealed to me, it was very clean looking, not a lot of piping, doo dads, and things hung on the sides of the boiler to mess up the lines. At least the side they took the pic from, anyway. There doesn't seem to be much B&A equipment modeled out there, except for the potato reefers. At some point in the future I am going to model a B&A BL2 in 1/8th. Possibly an F3A as well, my grandfather got his back broken when he was in a wreck in one. I remember the full body brace he had to wear when I was a wee tot.
Does any B&A steam survive, or did it all get turned into razor blades?

All BAR steam was sold as scrap, and fairly early into the 1950's. A Mountain or two went to the B&O, but they didn't last long.

(1) I have built a brand new copper boiler for it as it came into my possession with an odd water tube boiler (not original) under the guidance of Keith Wood. I am fitting it along with a new throttle. The chassis runs well on air.

(2) Neither of my grandfathers spent time drafting out complete drawings. Shop sketches were about it if anything. This was quite common in the early days of the hobby if you were not building a commercial design.

(3) I have an album about this locomotive on Facebook if you are interested.

Nice looking boiler! Would you mind telling us the diameter?

It is 5-inch in diameter.

Keith Wood drew the new boiler in CAD. I would print out elevation views and glue them to the sheets and then cut, drill, and bend over formers that I made.
