Laird Crossheads

Post by Dale Grice »

Hi all,
Anyone know if someone has Laird crosshead castings? I did a search for Laird and came up with some discussion and discussion about patterns a while back.

Thanks,

Dale Grice

The Fitchburg Northern 2-6-0 from Allen Models uses a Laird cross head, although this might be too small for your application.
Also, the D&RGW C21 2-8-0 and the RGS 20 4-6-0 by Hartford Shops use a Laird.

I built mine from two side plates and a nose piece and soldered them together.

Holding castings and getting in there to machine as needed is a real bear
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

I have a mold for Laird crossheads.

I’ll pull dimensions from these if you’re interested. I’ll have to send the mold up to the foundry and get some more cast.

There are two kinds -
the ones that use two guide bars with the CH sliding between them. This is what I sometimes see in models, like Fitchburg.
The ones that used one CH guidebar and the CH kinda "wraps" around it. This is what I see on lots of Porters. These can be whittled out of chunk-o-arn.
