Re: 1.5" Scale Boiler Manufacturers
I was fortunate enough to acquire a partial build started in the late 1980s. The 0-4-0T project came with a commercially built boiler stamped "MLW No. 572, 1988, Not For Commercial Use" amoungst other things. If anyone knows MLW, it would be cool to pass onto them that their boiler is (merrily?) chugging around the Golden Gate Live Steamers track. (Merrily?) because the locomotive has certainly had its growing pains since first steam.

The 0-4-0T above was my first locomotive. I am also the caretaker of the Dave Gumz 4-6-0, 4-3/4" gauge, 1-1/2" scale, 4-6-0. Oh to have more cool gentlemen like Dave around. This locomotive saw first steam in 1996. Rest In Peace Dave.

Thanks cbrew, I've just written Mammoth Locomotive Works and we'll see if Harley's boiler could be one of theirs.cbrew wrote: ↑Tue Jan 04, 2022 11:56 am Nice,,, if i was to guess, MLW is "Mammoth locomotive works LLC"

Re: 1.5" Scale Boiler Manufacturers
oh, update on my first boiler build,
i am happy to report it passed hydro, holding 225 for over 2 hours.
i only had two pin holes in one of the verticals stays i had to cut out and weld. likely a start stop issue i didnt blend well.
the paper work is almost finished for washington state, all the calcs have come in well above the 150 max the state will allow a hobby boiler to operate at. the safeties i have are set at 135 and 140.
as you can see, i am not wasting any time.
I also added cad rendering for the jacket to smooth the transition.
enjoy

@ paralleler—
Mr. Sclavi @ Mercer could also have been the builder. Nice locomotive!

The welded on steam dome cap is something that Dave. Sclavi used
Too many things going on to bother listing them.
Re: 1.5" Scale Boiler Manufacturers
cbrew, are the threaded plugs in the firebox cleanouts or fusible plugs?

for four siphons tubes that feed from the side sheets to the crown
If it is not live steam. its not worth it.
Re: 1.5" Scale Boiler Manufacturers
Ah... didn't think about siphon tubes. Thanks!
Re: 1.5" Scale Boiler Manufacturers
I will grab a picture once they are installed. I left them out during the first hydro just incase i needed to reroll any of the flues
If it is not live steam. its not worth it.

Re: 1.5" Scale Boiler Manufacturers
I just finished up a couple mikado boilers and continue to build on the side. Being a Union Pacific RR engineer keeps my shop time very unsteady. Giving a quote is next to impossible with the market all over the place for material pricing and availability. I will not cut corners and compromise quality for the sake of cost. Anyone who says its easy has never built one from start to finish. Welding is a small portion with preparation taking most of the time. I do however like to tig weld everything and being a little slower process prefer the results of such. Hands down Marty Knox is the boiler man the rest of us just hope to stand in his shadow.Bob Dean and Vance nickerson could also be potential boiler sources.
