New line of SCALE wheels

Post by David S Coster »

I am working on doing a new line of Wheels and Axels for Accucraft. I have done the drawings for a Forged wheel in scale sizes. 33", 36", and 40" for both 1.5 & 1.6 scales IE: six drawings. We should be able to produce them for under $25 a wheel, just how far under depended on demand. So I am going to ask for your opinion on what ones we should stock and what one will be for special orders. I have also done the axels for these wheels. There is a universal axel for both 7.25 / 7.5 it can be set for either, as well as one for each gauge. We will be offering the wheels in the new Quarter inch flange that was developed and freely distributed by that three letter company I used to run. Sorry I can't say their name, you know the one. Hence forth I will be calling it the Quarter or 25 Flange. Please select one flange type and up to three wheel sizes that you would use. This is marketing research that will help in bringing new products to our hobby.

What is the 1/4 flange?

What material are these going to be made of?

Castings or forgings?

I'm guessing it's this. https://www.rmirailworks.com/RMI-25_Whe ... EZmJ2hKiUk

That doesn't answer the question that was posed. Cast wheels, forged wheels or even wheels made from bar stock could be CNC machined.

Amen Harold.

The 1/4 flange would be way out of scale for 1.5” and 1.6” scale wheels. They would be better on the larger scales like 2.5” and bigger.

As I’m not building anything bigger than 1.6” scale; I won’t be needing the taller flanges. I personally prefer to turn my own wheels.

We are offering both flanges. The reason for the taller flange is it tracked better and dose less damage to the rail! As for scale, because of the center of gravity of the scale equipment let alone with riders on the cars, true scale wheels and be problematic, The I.B.LS. is not true scale either, It was a compromise by all the manufactures way back when.

Why can't you design something that looks like the prototype? The cross section is way different from the prototype. Should be a hub on the back protruding about a 1/4" for a longer engagement with the axle and the front hub should be recessed about 3/16" so the journal box sits closer to the wheel center. My 2 cents.

Yes I also would like to know, castings, forgings or bar stock? And what alloy?
