FN or Chloe on propane BTU requirements?

Post by milwiron »

Hi All,
Understanding there are hundreds of variables to contend with is there a way to calculate/educated guess/stab in the dark propane firing BTU requirements for Fitchburg Northern and Chloe size steel copper tubed boilers? I have read the archives but could have missed something.
Thanks for any shove in the right direction.

I can JUST manage to get dragged around by a steam wagon with 2x7100btu/h burners. I'd assume the bare minimum then is about 14000 btu/h for one person or about equal to that in weight.

This is also confirmed by a quick look at OMLET numbers with coal- that when I did OMLET with a 3.5" loco, I burned 14 oz of coal in 20 min, so 42 oz/hr, or 2.625 lb/hr @ 16 000 btu/lb. That's with 4 pers behind a loco. (1300 lb trailed load). (10500 btu/hr/person @ 7 MPH)

I hope that helps,
James

Sorry, not the best photo but the only one I have. Burner is on the right side of the loco hard to see right away. Locoparts burner with 10 buds on it. I think each bud is about 5000 BTU. Does well pulling myself, a couple of additional people and a couple of cars.

I have 100k of locoparts burners in my loco with what is basically Allen cylinders and valve gear....which is a bit much. ..never really need all lit and running at full pressure.

Loco runs just fine with 50k of them lit...makes more steam than needed.

Each half of the burners are on separate gas feeds.
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

Thank you guys. I was considering 50 to 60K based on what James posted.
I appreciate the picture, it helps and splitting the jets between 2 "circuits" seems to be the way to go.

Checkout Harlock's old posts for the Chloe burner setup. Most I believe are doing 6 burners on a rectangular manifold. My Kozo A3 is similar size and I have 8 burners but I may end up going back to 6. I can't really "idle" the loco. It's either hot or it's hotter. :)

Separately pipe propane to just one of the burners, with a separate control valve.
Then you have a pilot burner and "idle" control of the fire.
