Here are some pictures of me on the Ulin-designed beam engine built by John Dolph and Peter Moseley. This one is a bit different from his original design which had an on-board water tank.

Here's some pictures of the Ulin Mason Bogie. This one was built by a gentleman in Utah. It is currently being overhauled.

Not to change subjects, but what is the paint color on the jacket on that 2-6-6 Eureka in your pictures? I need to get some of that for a project I'm in the middle of.

Contact the NW Railway Museum in Snoqualmie, Washington.
They are installing and painting the jacketing on their newly running 1898 Rogers 0-6-0.

It may be stovepipe blue. It's hard to fake Russian iron these days, but a lot of modelers used blued stovepipe as jacketing to imitate it.

The actual color of Russia iron is lost to history...there is a lot of argument about what it actually looked like, and how much the blue was a reflection of the sky rather than an actual color, it may have been more neutral in tone. You can find some threads on Chaski about it if I remember right.

Hate to hear of Rich passing. He was really an interesting builder but, most of all a good live steamer. Speaking of his Mason Boggie, he brought it to the Comanche and Indian Gap and one day I was on a steaming bay next to him. He had a rough day with the engine derailing all over the place. I told him what I saw wrong with it----the pony truck could not be raised or lowered when compared to the drivers. I showed him that by pulling the engine where the pony truck was past the end of the bay hanging in the air. It could not be raised or lowered. He immediately went to work with a grinder to allow the truck to rise and fall. This greatly reduced the derailments. He said when it got it home he would fix it. The next year he came back with it and it never got on the ground.

Over the years he brought many different narrow gauge engines to the C&IG

I had the pleasure of meeting Richard twice at his home in Broomfield, CO. My aunt and uncle live just a few minutes from Richard and Linda. Richard told me that they were literally one of the first residents of the then-new community and county of Broomfield. Great guy. Still have his calendar and DVD from about 10 years ago or more.
