Bunting P43-4

Post by Dale Grice »

I came across a reference in building the RRSC mikado to Bunting P43-4. I see "Buning" is both a company and type of bearing material. But I cannot come up with P43-4. Is this an old reference and what would be a good cross. I assume a porous bronze would be good. But then you know what assume means.

Thanks for the help.

That is what is commonly known as oilite bronze. It is formed from powder under high pressure to produce oilite bronze bushings

It is used for a bushing in the valve gear link support. Drawing (in theory) here:

The SAE specification for sintered bronze Oil-impregnated bearings is SAE 841, aka “Oilite. Cast bronze is SAE 660, aka C93200 alloy.

Do not use it in any area subject to repeated impact loading
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

I wouldn't use it on a locomotive, use a good grade bronze with a oil hole.
I do use "oil-lite" bushings on my non riding cars and they work fine.

I use Oilite bushings in all my Allen Ten Wheeler rod brasses.
They show no wear after 600+ miles of steaming.
I did drill tiny oil holes through the tops to facilitate lubrication from the small reservoirs above.
Maybe that makes a difference.
